"F. Skaryna Belarusian Language Society" was created in 1989. The members of the governing body "Respublicanskaya Rada" have always been the representatives of the national elite - the outstanding scientists, writers, etc.: Maksim Tank, Fiodar Jankouski, Vasil Bykau, Yanka Bryl, Mikhail Dziamchuk, Anatol Butevich, Tamara Sauchuk, Jaugen Vajtovich, Zianon Pazniak, Yury Hadyka, Aleg Loyka, Adam Maldzis, Arthur Volsky, Anatol Klyshka, Viachaslau Adamchyk.
Presently the members of the "Rada" are Genadz Buraukin, Nil Gilevich, Genadz Cychun, Radzim Garetski, Vasil Zujonak, Leanid Lych, Uladzimir Sodal, etc.
The aim of the organization is the support of the state status of the Belarusian language and the protection of the linguistic rights.
The society has organized or taken part in the following actions:
- Drafting of "The Law on Languages in the Belarusian SSR" and the control of its implementation (1990)
- Scientific conference "The Language of the People - the Language of the State" (1990).
- "The State Program on the Development of the Belarusian and Other National Languages in the Republic of Belarus" (1991).
- Edition of more than 20 fiction, scientific, popular scientific, educational books: "Narysy z Gistoryi Belaruskaga Mastactva" by M. Shchakacikhin, "Pachatki Rodnaje Movy" by V. Ramantsevich, "Geagrfija Belarusi" by A. Smolich, dictionaries of physical, mathematical, zooparazitological, botany and other terms. (1990-1995).
- Two conferences (in cooperation with the Ministry of Education) on the Belarusian terminology.
- Edition of the weekly newspaper "Nasha Slova".
- Monitoring of the National Census. More than 120 violations fixed. (1999)
- Charity actions for the poor families (together with the independent trade unions). More than 500 books on the Belarusian history distributed free of charge. (1999)
- Conference at the Belarusian University of Culture "University Yelskich" (October 7, 1999).
- Two competitions "Belarus as I View it" (56 works - 10 winners), "Belarus - Our Home in the 21 Century" (660 works of children from 6 to 16). (1999)
- Competition "The Everyday Life in Belarus: 1945-1965" (together with the Current History Archive) (1999).
- Contest for the best Belarusian rural school "The Preservation of the National Cultural and Historical Heritage" (together with the Belarusian School Society). More than 50 participants.
- Edition of the book "Aniamenne": Chronicles of the Belarusian Language Demolition" The book contains documental materials on the discrimination of the Belarusian languages by the state regime in the 2-nd half of the 90-ies. (2000)
- Conference "The Law on Languages": Results and Perspectives" (February 26, 2000).
- Scientific conference "Belarusian Toponymics: The History and the Present State" (2000).
- Conference "The National Idea: Ways towards the Society Consolidation" (together with the Human Rights Center) (February 25, 2001).
- Regular picketing in the major towns of the country: for the Belarusian National University creation, against "Nasha Niva" newspaper closure, against the Belarusian Lyceum of Humanities ñlosure, against the Belarusian language discrimination in the state mass-medias. (1996-2001)
- Contest among the schoolchildren and students of Minsk "Know Your City" (March-September 2000).
- About 10000 books distributed free of charge for the regional branches of the organization, rural schools and libraries as a matter of support of the Belarusian schools and classes. (1999-2000)
- Literature Club created that organizes writers' conferences.
- The public library of the ancient Belarusian books created (more than 600 items of unique books) (1999-2000).
- The initiative group on the Belarusian University creation. Its members are the most outstanding representatives of the Belarusian cultural and scientific elite. The concept of the university is worked out. (200-2001)
- Monitoring of the linguistic rights.
- The collection of signatures for the creation of the Belarusian National University is being continued. Up to September 2001 50000 signatures are collected (1999-2001).
- The strategy of the development of the Belarusian language is worked out. The concept of the strategy was presented at the 8-th BLS conference (May 20, 2001).
- The organization embraces 8 commissions: Organizational, Educational, Terminology and Historical Heraldry, Speech Culture and Orthography Development, Visual and Audial Environment, International Contacts, Publishing.
The organizational branches operate in 76 sites of Belarus as well as in Moscow, Ircutsk, St-Petersburg, Riga, Kohtla-Jarve, Toronto, etc. About 8000 people are members of the society.
